Congress MP and party Chief Varsha Gaikwad on Saturday launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his series of tweets targeting the grand old party for making lofty poll promises which he said the party never fulfilled when voted to power.

The Prime Minister in his tweets accused the Congress party of duping people and taking their votes on the back of promises which they never kept in the states they won earlier. He talked about states like Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan and Telangana among others.

The statement didn’t go down well with the Congress leadership and top leaders came out all guns blazing against the Prime Minister, listing out work they had done in their respective states.

Varsha Gaikwad too put out a lengthy post on X, formerly Twitter, listing a slew of works and promises unfulfilled by the BJP and its allies.

Calling it the BJP’s “own culture of fake and unfulfilled promises aka jumlas” she raised up the issue of Mahamanav Bharat Ratna Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar memorial which was supposed to be completed by 2020. “Still incomplete,” she said.

“Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s memorial, the public is literally at sea regarding its completion,” she pointed out another project.

The Congress MP also raked up another projects like the MTHL. “The MTHL was projected to have a daily traffic of close to 90,000 vehicles, but your government’s greed for toll tax has ensured only that only 24,000 vehicles use it as of now – a 70 per cent gap in ridership,” she tlsaid taking a jibe at Modi.

She also took a potshot at the figures of economy promised by the government

“Jumla of $1 trillion economy – instead Maharashtra’s fiscal deficit has risen by 63 per cent and fiscal debt has risen by 24 per cent. The BMC, the richest civic body of the country, is facing an unprecedented cash crunch. I am not even getting into the promises you made regarding jobs or the economy to the country, as that list is far longer,” she said.

The Mumbai chief also raised the burning issue of Dharavi redevelopment plan, the project of which has been allotted to the Adani group.

“But what is even more shameful is the speed at which you have fulfilled promises made to your best friend at the cost of public good – be it the allotment of Dharavi and all free land of Mumbai, the airport and land surrounding it, electricity projects – anything your friend names he gets, irrespective of what the public needs and deserves,” Gaikwad tore into the prime minister.

The war of words began after the prime minister and BJP leaders accused Congress of fake promises in election-bound states.

“Your only true allegiance is to your businessmen friends and for them you will lie, cheat and steal from the public,” Gaikwad concluded.

The state of Maharashtra goes to polls on November 20, with counting of votes scheduled for November 23.

The state is witnessing a fierce fight and a heated campaign between the ruling Mahayuti alliance and prime opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi.
