At the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards, K-pop groups BTS, BLACKPINK, and SEVENTEEN received a slew of prizes (VMAs). For the fourth year in a row, BTS made history by taking home the Best Group prize. Along with BTS, the category also included nominations for Silk Sonic, Blackpink, City Girls, Foo Fighters, Imagine Dragons, Maneskin, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Foo Fighters. BTS members RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook, however, did not attend this year’s VMAs.
Members of BLACKPINK Jisoo, Jennie, Rose, and Lisa performed their pre-release single Pink Venom while walking the red carpet. Singer Taylor Swift was spotted dancing in the crowd while they performed. BLACKPINK made history at the MTV VMAs by being the first female K-pop performer to take the stage at the event. From the forthcoming album Born Pink, Pink Venom is the group’s most recent single.
As part of their Ready For Love collaboration with PUBG, BLACKPINK also took home the prize for Best Metaverse Performance. Other nominees besides Blackpink included BTS for Minecraft, Charli XCX for Roblox, Justin Bieber for Wave: An Interactive Virtual Experience, Rift Tour with Ariana Grande for Fortnite, and Twenty One Pilots Concert Experience for Roblox.
Lisa’s solo project, LALISA, received Best K-Pop. In a video that was posted by a fan account on Twitter, Taylor gave her a standing ovation, and he also exhorted others to do the same. BLINK, a BLACKPINK fan club, was also addressed by Lisa during her award speech. She was heard stating, “BLINKS, you’re like the most significant ones,” in a video. “I appreciate you so much for making this possible. I cherish you.” She also praised Jisoo, Jennie, and Rose of BLACKPINK for the audience’s applause and heart-hand gestures.
As the winner of the Push Performance of the Year for their song Rock With You, the K-pop group Seventeen received their first award. Griff – One Night, Remi Wolf – Sexy Villain, and Nessa Barrett – I Hope Ur Miserable Until Ur Dead were also nominated in this category.
“It was a wonderful honour to be chosen as the first K-pop artist for MTV Push, and it was even better to win the Push Performance of the Year award,” said SEVENTEEN in their video acceptance speech. “Thank you VMAs, and thank you to our fans CARATs for all their love and support,” Mingyu said.
The VMAs were presented on Sunday in New Jersey at a live ceremony. At the awards ceremony, actor Johnny Depp made an appearance as a floating astronaut hanging above the audience.
