Hundreds of protesters surrounded the Bangladesh Supreme Court on Saturday, demanding the resignation of Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan and the judges of the Appellate Division. The protesters, including students and lawyers, gathered at the Supreme Court premises around 10:30 a.m., giving the chief justice a deadline to resign by 1 p.m. local time.
The demonstration was sparked by a Facebook post from Asif Mahmud, an adviser to the Youth and Sports Ministry of the Interim government, who called for the unconditional resignation of Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan. Mahmud also demanded the cancellation of a full court meeting planned to decide on the continuation of virtual court proceedings.
In response to the escalating protest, Chief Justice Hassan postponed the full court meeting, which was originally convened to address whether the court’s operations would continue virtually. The situation remains tense as protesters continue to press for immediate action.
