55-Year-Old Chinese Delivery Driver Dies While Napping After 18-Hour Workdays

A heartbreaking incident occurred in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, where a delivery driver was discovered dead while resting on his bike. The man, who was the only source of income for his family, reportedly worked 18 hours every day to make ends meet. His colleagues revealed that he often slept just three hours before starting another long shift.

How Was the Incident Discovered?

According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), the tragic event came to public attention after a video circulated on Chinese social media platforms. The video ignited widespread discussions about the working conditions and legal rights of delivery workers.

18-Hour Workdays

The delivery driver, identified as Yuan, was found lifeless on his electric bike while trying to rest after a long day of work. Yuan was financially supporting his 16-year-old son’s education. His other son, who is married, lives in a different part of China with his family.

Co-Workers’ Testimony

Yuan’s colleagues spoke about his relentless work schedule. “He would sometimes work until 3 a.m., then rise at 6 a.m. to start again. When he felt tired, he’d take a short nap on his bike, waiting for the next order,” said Yang, one of his co-workers.
