What Is Bumblebee Jasper?
Bumblebee Jasper was discovered in the 1990s at Mount Papandayan in the hot vents of an active volcano in West Java, Indonesia.
It is formed in the fumaroles where the gases and hot steam escape. These fumaroles eventually become hot springs after rain and sediments collect and liquefy along with volcanic ash.
As it cools down miners are able to collect this wonderfully colored stone from the resulting mud pools.
So far it has not been discovered anywhere else, making it a very rare and special stone indeed.

Bumblebee Jasper is a ‘calcite’ stone and has a hardness rating of 2.5 on the Mohs scale. Its chemical composition consists of CaCO3, calcium carbonate, and sulfur.
It is not truly a jasper as it is not a ‘chalcedony’ and therefore does not contain crystalline quartz. It does however contain small amounts of sulfur and arsenic, making it what is deemed to be a “toxic” stone.
This may sound alarming but most tumbled and polished stones are very safe, it just means that some extra care should be taken when using Bumblebee Jasper like wearing it over your clothes if using as jewelry and making sure you wash your hands after use – especially if you have been handling a “raw” stone.
