October's Hunter's Moon peaked early October 26 at 12:11 a.m. EDT

October's full moon, known as the Hunter's Moon, reached peak illumination at 12:12 a.m. ET on Monday, October 26, according to EarthSky as reported by CNN. The moon rose early at sunset on Sunday, and Saturn appeared gold and sat a few degrees south of it as night fell, CNN reports.

The moon looked more orange near the horizon because its light passes through a denser layer of air that scatters blue and violet wavelengths, leaving the red and orange tones more visible, CNN reports.

Why the hunter's moon gets its name#

The October full moon follows September's Harvest Moon and traditionally marked the point when fields had been cleared, giving hunters moonlight to track game and prepare food for winter, CNN reports. The Old Farmer's Almanac traces the name to that same seasonal shift from gathering crops to hunting meat, Yahoo Tech reports.

Other cultures have their own names tied to the season. The Cree call it the Migrating Moon for southward bird journeys, while the Ojibwe and Haida call it the Freezing Moon or Ice Moon, and the Dakota call it the Drying Rice Moon, Yahoo Tech reports. Noah Petro, chief of NASA's Planetary Geology, Geophysics and Geochemistry Lab at Goddard Space Flight Center, said "these names were assigned to the moon because the moon has a meaning," and encouraged people to find their own connection to the season, CNN reports.

A shared night for Sharad Purnima observers#

The same full moon coincided with Sharad Purnima, celebrated this year on Sunday, October 25, according to the Economic Times. Devotees worship Goddess Lakshmi, fast, and prepare rice kheer that many families place under the moonlight before eating it, believing the moon's rays carry amrit, or nectar, the outlet reports.

The Purnima tithi, or lunar day, began October 25 and ran through the morning of October 26, so moon worship and the kheer ritual were considered suited to the night of the 25th, while bathing and donation rituals could be performed the following day according to local panchang traditions, the Economic Times reports.

What astrologers say the Taurus placement means#

This year's Hunter's Moon fell in Taurus while the sun moved through Scorpio, a pairing astrologers associate with matters of wealth, bonds between people and the ability to trust emotionally, according to the Hindustan Times. In Western astrology, Taurus is associated with stability, comfort, money and personal values, while Scorpio relates to intimacy and emotional change, the outlet reports.

The Economic Times similarly characterizes the Taurus full moon as encouraging contemplation of stability, patience and material resources, while noting that such readings carry symbolic rather than scientific weight, and that the moon may encourage reflection on spending and long-term security, the outlet reports.
