Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal recently engaged in conversations with three of the company’s delivery agents to gain insights into their working conditions and job satisfaction. In a video shared by Goyal, he discussed the tipping culture in various cities and customers’ perceptions of how tips are handled.

Despite the positive intentions behind the video, some viewers took it as an opportunity to criticize Zomato, comparing the conversation to a boss seeking validation from favored employees.

During the discussion, Goyal asked the delivery partners about their experiences with receiving tips, specifically addressing concerns about whether they receive the full tip amount. The agents confirmed that they do receive the entire tip.

The video sparked humorous comments on social media platforms. One Instagram user jokingly likened the conversation to an HR inquiry just before an appraisal, while another user sarcastically compared it to a manager seeking reassurance from his preferred employees.

Shantanu Deshpande, founder and CEO of Bombay Shaving Company, defended Goyal and Zomato, calling the suspicions about the company’s handling of tips “ridiculous.” Deshpande argued that, as a publicly traded company, Zomato would have more reliable methods to increase revenue than risking its reputation by mishandling tips.

Deshpande suggested that such suspicions stem from individuals’ experiences in low-trust environments, leading them to believe that everyone, from the government to local vendors, is trying to deceive them.

The three Zomato delivery partners featured in Goyal’s videos—Umesha from Bengaluru, Vinish from Thiruvananthapuram, and Jaswinder from Chandigarh—have been working with the company for approximately three years, each starting their employment in different parts of India.
