Each city has its unique features, and Yanjin County is widely recognized as the world’s narrowest city. Situated along the Nanxi River amidst the steep mountains of China’s Yunnan Province, Yanjin County is home to a population of over 500,000 people. A recent viral video showcasing the city has captured the attention of many, highlighting its astonishing layout.

The video reveals a river flowing between mountains, with houses and buildings constructed on both sides. This sight is often shocking to those viewing it for the first time, as it challenges the conventional idea of urban planning. Despite its picturesque appearance, living in Yanjin County is reportedly quite challenging.

The city’s narrowest point measures just 30 meters wide, while its widest area spans 300 meters. There is only one road on each side of the river for transportation, serving both residents and tourists. These roads, stretching several kilometers, are the primary means of entry and exit for the city. Due to the risk of floods, the buildings along the riverbank are constructed on pillars to keep them above floodwaters.

Despite the difficulties, the residents have lived here for generations and are deeply connected to the city. They have chosen to remain in Yanjin County despite its challenges. The viral video was shared on Instagram, describing Yanjin County as “the narrowest county in China, with only one main road.”

The video has garnered over 500,000 views and 22,000 likes, with many expressing disbelief and amazement. One commenter questioned if the scene was the result of artificial intelligence, while another remarked on the impact of human activity on the river water. Another user praised the resilience and innovation of the Chinese people, stating that they continue to surprise with their remarkable achievements.
