What is ASMR?
For context, ASMR stands for Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response, a term that describes a relaxing sensation triggered by specific sounds or visuals. Generally, people use ASMR videos, like whispering or tapping, to relax and reduce stress. However, the use of this calming term for a deportation video left many surprised.
ICE’s Video Sparks Outrage
The video, initially posted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), showed a deportation flight preparing to take off from Seattle. It featured migrants being sent back to their home countries while restrained with chains and handcuffs.
As the video circulated on social media, it quickly drew mixed reactions. On one hand, some viewers called it “crass entertainment” and “disgusting.” On the other hand, a few users expressed support for the video. Nevertheless, critics went as far as comparing this public display to the cruel practices of oppressive regimes.
Allegations of Mistreatment
Meanwhile, reports of mistreatment emerged, particularly concerning Indian migrants. According to The Indian Express, three U.S. military planes carrying Indian deportees recently landed in Amritsar. Notably, many of them alleged they were handcuffed and chained throughout the flight.
Additionally, some Sikh deportees claimed that officials forcibly removed their turbans, raising serious concerns about religious and human rights violations.
A Heated Debate Unfolds
Overall, the video has sparked a heated debate. While a section of the public praised the government’s actions, many others criticized the video as a disturbing blend of policy and entertainment. Consequently, the White House’s approach to showcasing deportations remains under intense scrutiny.
