Zohran Mamdani is newly elected as the mayor of New York City, has embarked on his historic journey by naming an all-female transition team, the first such instance in the political history of the city.
Mamdani, the first Indian-origin, African born Muslim to lead America’s largest city, secured a sweeping victory over former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. He will officially begin to assume office from January 1, 2026.
A Team of Experienced Women Leaders
Mamdani’s transition committee was comprised of women who, for decades shaped New York’s governance under former mayors Bill de Blasio, Eric Adams and Michael Bloomberg.
Leading the transition will be Elana Leopold, a progressive political strategist and veteran of de Blasio’s administration, who will become executive director. She will be joined by the following as co-chairs: Maria Torres-Springer, former deputy mayor Lina Khan, former Federal Trade Commission chair Grace Bonilla, a nonprofit leader and Melanie Hartzog, a seasoned city budget expert.

This group represents the mix of experience in urban development, finance, social welfare and regulatory policy that is key to ensuring a smooth transition and diverse forward looking administration.
Mamdani’s Vision for a People Driven City Hall
During his first post-election briefing, Mamdani aimed to reassure the audience that his main goal is to build a City Hall capable of delivering on the promises we made. He added that his leadership team would include experts in organizing and policy, community leadership and working-class voices who understand the everyday realities facing New Yorkers.
“We will cast a wide net,” he said. “This transition is not just about staffing it’s about reshaping how our city government listens and acts.”
The transition team plays the all important role in connecting the grassroots idealism of the campaign with the operational imperatives of City Hall, setting the tone for the governance of his incoming administration.
A moment in history for New York
Mamdani’s ascendancy reflects a generational and ideological shift inside New York politics. Having defeated powerful rivals in a record turnout election, the 34-year-old mayor elect now commands a city of more than 8 million people, a workforce of nearly 300,000 municipal employees and a budget that surpasses $100 billion.
Putting the transition of the city in the hands of women speaks volumes to a larger message of fairness, equity, inclusivity and reformist governance. For New Yorkers, it ushers in a new era-development anchored on progressive ideals, collaboration within the community and a commitment toward openness.
