Sergio Gor, who is being considered to be the next U.S. Ambassador to India, hinted on Thursday, September 11, 2025, that President Donald Trump may visit India later this year for the Quad Leaders Summit. Although Gor did not provide exact dates, he clearly indicated that a visit is in the works.
During his confirmation hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, when asked about the timing of the visit, Gor said, “The President is fully committed to meeting leaders of the Quad…there have already been talks about a trip for the next Quad meeting.” He also emphasized the importance of the Quad by adding, “QUAD is vitally important.”
Originally, India was scheduled to host the Quad Summit in 2024. However, due to political circumstances in the United States, then-President Joe Biden was unable to travel abroad, so the venue was shifted to the U.S. The upcoming Quad Leaders Summit in 2025 is scheduled for November, and it is widely expected to focus on strengthening cooperation among key Indo-Pacific democracies.
US-India Relations: A Strategic Partnership
Sergio Gor also talked about the relationship between the U.S. and India, especially on trade and diplomacy. He said India is more than just a regional ally to the U.S. Instead, India is seen as a strategic partner. During the hearing, Gor mentioned that the two countries are getting closer to a trade agreement, saying, “Washington and New Delhi are not that far apart right now on a trade deal.” He also pointed out the strong personal relationship between President Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying, “President Trump has a deep friendship with Prime Minister Modi. If you’ve noticed, when he goes after other nations, he goes after their leaders. When President Trump has been critical of India, he goes out of his way to compliment Modi.”

Sergio Gor, the nominee for the next US Ambassador to India, said that they would make it a top priority to ensure that India is pulled to their side and away from China. He further stated that while India and the US might be experiencing some hiccups at the moment, they were on track to resolve those issues. He emphasized that the relationship with the Indian government and the Indian people extended many more decades and described it as much warmer than the relationship India has with China. Gor pointed out that Chinese expansionism was not only occurring at the border with India but was spreading across the region. He reiterated that making India align with the US rather than China would remain a top priority. Regarding ongoing trade negotiations, he mentioned that they wanted the Indian market to open up to US crude oil, petroleum products, and LNG. He also highlighted that India’s middle class is larger than the entire US population.

Background: What Is the Quad and Why Is It Important?
The Quad, or Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, is a strategic group that includes the United States, India, Japan, and Australia. It was started in 2007 and aims to support a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific region. The Quad works to handle regional security issues, improve economic cooperation, and promote shared democratic values, especially in light of China’s increasing influence in the area.
At first, the Quad wasn’t seen as important, but in recent years, it has become more relevant because of worries about China’s growing power and actions in the region.
The Quad Leaders Summit is a top–level meeting where leaders talk about working together on issues like security, infrastructure, climate change, and technology.<br>
