Alaska Airlines and its subsidiary, Horizon Air, have temporarily halted operations across the United States following an IT outage. The airline reported the issue on Thursday around 10 PM Eastern Time. The outage affected both domestic and international flights, including routes to Mexico and Canada.

This is the second IT-related grounding for Alaska Airlines this year, after a similar incident occurred in July. The Federal Aviation Authority issued a temporary ground stop at the airline’s request. Hawaiian Airlines, also part of the Alaska Air Group, continues to operate normally.

Flight Cancellations and Delays

The IT outage caused 39 Alaska Airlines flights to be canceled and 241 others to be delayed. Alaska Airlines is one of the largest carriers in the US, operating across 140 destinations in 37 states and 12 countries.

Passengers affected by cancellations or delays are advised to check flight status and travel arrangements. Many travelers reported disruptions at airports across the country.

Flexible Travel Policy for Affected Passengers

Alaska Airlines issued a social media statement on Thursday at approximately 11:30 PM Eastern Time. The airline announced a flexible travel policy for affected passengers.

“Passengers with non-refundable tickets are allowed to change or cancel their ticket without a fee through October 27, provided the tickets are issued by Alaska Airlines only,” the statement read.

The airline is offering a travel waiver for eligible tickets to reduce the inconvenience caused by the outage.

Background on Alaska Airlines IT Issues

This incident highlights ongoing IT infrastructure challenges faced by airlines. Alaska Airlines experienced a similar problem in July, causing widespread delays. Airlines increasingly rely on technology for scheduling, check-ins, and flight operations, making them vulnerable to technical failures.

Experts say such outages can affect air traffic management, gate assignments, and passenger communications, leading to delays and cancellations across multiple airports.

Passenger Safety and Support

Alaska Airlines emphasizes passenger safety and timely updates during such incidents. Airport staff are assisting travelers stranded due to cancellations and delays.

Travelers are advised to contact Alaska Airlines customer service for guidance or to rebook flights. The travel waiver provides a temporary relief for those holding non-refundable tickets.
