Michael George Glen Waltz was born on January 31, 1974, in Boynton Beach, Florida. He is an American politician and a former U.S. Representative for Florida’s 6th congressional district. Waltz is a Republican and has had a career of honor in both public service and military service.
Military Service and Early Life
Waltz completed his graduation from the renowned Virginia Military Institute in 1996 and then served in the U.S. Army from 1996 to 2000, where he underwent several combat tours in Afghanistan, the Middle East, and Africa as a Special Forces officer. He went on to serve in the Army Reserves until 2023, attaining the rank of Colonel. His service in the military received a string of commendations, including the Bronze Star and the Defense Meritorious Service Medal.

Mike Waltz Political Career
In 2018, Waltz won election to the U.S. House of Representatives, replacing Ron DeSantis, who was elected Governor of Florida. He was re-elected in 2020, 2022, and 2024. While in office, Waltz sat on the House Armed Services and Foreign Affairs Committees and was chairman of the Subcommittee on Readiness. He was particularly vocal in his hardline approach to China and demanded a robust U.S. military presence throughout the world.
Mike Waltz as a National Security Advisor
In November 2024, U.S. President Donald Trump nominated Waltz to become National Security Advisor. His stay was brief, though. In May 2025, Waltz quit over a security blunder when a private Signal group chat inadvertently included a journalist and touched on sensitive military strategy.

Ambassador to the United Nations
In spite of the delay, Waltz was nominated to be the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. Following procedural delays of several months, the Senate ratified his appointment on September 19, 2025, in a vote of 47-43. Waltz stressed the requirement for reforms at the U.N. and a more assertive U.S. role in countering adversarial states such as China.
