Dan Bongino has announced he would be resigning from the position as the deputy director of the FBI in January 2026. Dan wanted to return to his podcast and media career. Dan Bongino thanked the President Donald Trump, the FBI director Kash Patel, and the Attorney General Pam Bondi for the opportunity to serve.

The appointment was done by Trump in February 2025. Before being appointed, Bongino worked as a police officer for the New York City police department and later as an agent for the US Secret Service. Recently, he gained popularity as the host of a podcast and a political commentator. His appointment came as a shock because he had no experience working for the FBI and was opposed by the FBI Agents Association.

During this period of service, Bongino broke through a backlog of cases, such as the investigation into pipe bombs on January 6. FBI Director Patel praised Bongino for bringing transparency and progress to the FBI. Bongino expressed the honor of serving people and appreciation to Americans everywhere for supporting them.

Dan Bongino is an American political commentator, radio host, and ex-law enforcement official. He is currently serving as the 20th Deputy Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Dan Bongino promoted the false “Spygate” theory, claiming that President Obama’s administration spied on Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign, though multiple investigations by the FBI, Justice Department, and Director of National Intelligence found no evidence. He also spread false claims that the 2020 US presidential election was rigged, which placed him on The New York Times’ list of top “misinformation superspreaders.” After the January 6 Capitol riot, his Twitter account was temporarily suspended for violating civic integrity rules.

In 2021, Bongino joined Cumulus Media to replace The Rush Limbaugh Show and also hosted the weekend program Unfiltered with Dan Bongino on Fox News.

Dan Bongino has also run for Congress a couple of times but has not been successful. He lost his bid to run for the United States Senate in Maryland to a Democrat, Ben Cardin, in 2012. He has also lost to an incumbent Democrat, John Delaney, to represent Maryland’s 6th Congressional District, also in 2014. Dan Bongino relocated to Florida but lost his bid to run for Florida’s 19th Congressional District to a Republican candidate in 2016. This was marred by controversy when he was recorded as using profanities when confronting a reporter.

The New York Times announced on August 18 that Bongino would share a “Co-Deputy Directorship” position, which would come along with Missouri’s Attorney General Andrew Bailey, as Bongino’s new Co-Deputy Director. Bailey began his term as Co-Deputy Director on September 15, 2025.

Dan Bongino announced that doctors found a large tumor in his throat. He had surgery in October and was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma. Dan Bongino received treatments and later announced in 2021 that he overcame cancer.
