After brokering a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, US President Donald Trump has turned his attention to the Russia-Ukraine war. While travelling on Air Force One to Israel on Monday (Oct 13), Trump warned Russia about the potential use of Tomahawk missiles.
“I might say, ‘Look: if this war is not going to get settled, I’m going to send them Tomahawks.’ The Tomahawk is an incredible weapon, a very offensive weapon. And honestly, Russia does not need that,” Trump said.
He added, “I might tell them that if the war is not settled, that we may very well. We may not, but we may do it. I think it’s appropriate to bring up.”
What Are Tomahawk Missiles?
Tomahawk missiles are subsonic, jet-powered cruise missiles designed for long-range precision strikes. They can operate in all weather conditions and can be launched from surface ships or submarines.
Each missile measures about 20 feet (6.1 meters) long, has a wingspan of 8.5 feet, and weighs roughly 1,510 kg. With a range of 2,500 km (1,500 miles), they can reach targets far inside enemy territory — putting Moscow within potential reach if used in the Ukraine conflict.
Tomahawks can carry different types of warheads, including high-explosive, submunitions, and bunker-busters. Their advanced guidance systems allow precise targeting, even in heavily defended airspace.
Why Tomahawks Matter in Ukraine?
Trump’s mention of Tomahawks marks a strong warning to Russia. Analysts say the missile’s range and accuracy make it a powerful deterrent. The US has long used Tomahawks for strategic strikes in conflicts, emphasizing both offensive and defensive capabilities.
While the US has not confirmed immediate plans to supply these missiles to Ukraine, Trump’s comments signal that Washington is willing to escalate pressure if peace negotiations stall.
Russia Raises Alarm
Russia responded cautiously to Trump’s statements. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told Russian state television, “The topic of Tomahawks is of extreme concern.” He warned that tensions could escalate further, calling the situation “very dramatic” due to increasing global pressure.
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, an ally of Russia, called the potential US missile supply “plain stupidity” and criticized Ukraine for what he called reckless behaviour.
Global Reactions
Experts and diplomats worldwide are watching the situation closely. Some analysts warn that deploying Tomahawk missiles could dramatically raise the stakes in the Russia-Ukraine war. Others see the threat as a strategic move to push Russia toward negotiations.
The comments from Trump, Russia, and Belarus highlight growing international concern over escalation. The situation underscores the delicate balance between deterrence and actual military intervention in an ongoing war.
Strategic Impact of Tomahawks
Tomahawk missiles are highly capable weapons that could alter the dynamics of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Trump’s public warning has already stirred reactions from global leaders, showing how weapons diplomacy continues to play a critical role in modern warfare.
