U.S. Election Day 2025: What Time Do Polls Open & Close | From New York to California

On Tuesday, November 4, millions of Americans will make their way to polling stations to participate in state and local elections. though it is not a presidential election this year, a number of key races and statewide ballot measures will shape local governance and public policy. From school boards to state legislatures, the decisions made on this day will influence communities for years to come.

When Polls Open: Varying Start Times Across States

The hours of polling vary enormously around the country, and in certain instances, they even vary from one county to another. Most states open their polls at 7 a.m. local time but there are several exceptions.

6:00 a.m. openings: In Arizona, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Missouri, New Jersey, New York and Virginia permit early voters to start casting their ballots at 6 a.m. In Maine’s smallest towns with less than 500 residents, the polls may open as late as 10 a.m.

6:30 a.m. openings: In North Carolina, Ohio & West Virginia open their polls at 6:30 a.m. and close at 7:30 p.m.

Later openings: Voters in Arkansas will see polls open at 7:30 a.m., while Idaho and parts of Nebraska start at 8 a.m. States like Vermont, New Hampshire and Washington permit local authorities to set their own opening hours. In North Dakota, polls can open anytime between 7 and 9 a.m.

Most Polls Close by 7 or 8 p.m.

Though opening times may differ, most polling stations close between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. However, if a voter is in line when the polls close, he or she is legally allowed to vote. This ensures that every eligible voter who shows up on time can participate, regardless of long lines or delays.

What Voters Should Keep in Mind

Election officials strongly advise checking polling locations and hours of operation in advance by visiting the websites of local election offices. Rules vary by county, and changes can be made near Election Day and other essential preparations include bringing appropriate identification, reviewing sample ballots and verifying registration status to ensure a problem free experience at the polls.

But even without the presidential race, local elections stand at the very heart of everyday life as they decide school funding, infrastructure, public safety and environmental concerns. For many, these elections serve to remind us democracy starts in our neighborhoods one vote at a time.
