A United Airlines flight on the way to Muncih had to return to Washington Dulles International Airport shortly after takeoff on Friday due to an engine failure. The pilot called 'mayday' and declared an emergency.

The United Flight 108 took off at 6 pm, but when the Boeing 787 approached 10, 000 feet, the pilot informed the air traffic control that there is an engine failure. "Engine failure, United 108 declaring an emergency. Mayday, Mayday, Mayday," the pilot reported on the audio recording.

Immediately, the air traffic control instructed the pilot to fly back to the airport. "There's nobody between you and the field," the air traffic control assured.

The airplane was flown back to the airport and landed safely at Dulles at around 8:33 pm, as per FlightAware's data. The 219 passengers and 11 crew members all landed safely following the towing of the aircraft to a gate.

Crystal Nosal, an airport spokesperson, noted, "The aircraft landed safely, was inspected by the Airport Authority Fire and Rescue staff, then towed to a gate. There was no interruption to other flights."

United Airlines addressed the issue, saying, "The flight was then cancelled and we made arrangements to get passengers to reach their destination as soon as possible."
