US President Donald Trump has decided to impose a 35% tariff on Canadian imports starting August 1, 2025. He shared this in a letter addressed to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. He also posted the message on his Truth Social account. This letter is one of over 20 trade-related letters he has sent out since Monday.
Canada Accused of Retaliating
According to Trump, Canada did not cooperate with the US during trade talks. Instead, it responded by adding its own tariffs. As a result, Trump took action. He stated, “Instead of working with the United States, Canada retaliated with its own Tariffs. Starting August 1, 2025, we will charge Canada a Tariff of 35% on Canadian products sent into the United States, separate from all Sectoral Tariffs.”
Trump Warns of Further Increases
Trump issued a clear warning. If Canada raises tariffs on US goods, he will increase the US tariff by the same amount. “If for any reason you decide to raise your Tariffs, then, whatever the number you choose to raise them by, will be added onto the 35% that we charge,” he wrote.
Dairy and Trade Deficit at the Center
Furthermore, Trump criticized Canada’s dairy tariffs. He claimed they go as high as 400% and block American farmers from entering Canadian markets. He wrote, “The Trade Deficit is a major threat to our Economy and, indeed, our National Security.”
Other Concerns Include Fentanyl Flow
In addition to trade issues, Trump blamed Canada for allowing fentanyl to flow into the United States. He said this contributes to the challenges hurting the US economy and security.
Tariff Deadline Extended for Other Countries
Earlier in the week, Trump extended the deadline for tariff talks with several nations. The new deadline is August 1, giving partners more time to negotiate. However, during the same time, he escalated trade tensions by announcing new tariffs on Japan, South Korea, and others. He also introduced a 50% tariff on copper.
