US President Donald Trump has postponed his new wave of tariffs by a week, providing a brief window of reprieve for nations that are still in the process of negotiating with the US. The action amends the controversial “Liberation Day tariff” and represents a drastic change in America’s trade policy. Nations such as South Korea, Japan, the UK, the EU, Indonesia, and Vietnam clinched speedy deals to escape tariffs. But some — particularly India, Canada, and Mexico — are still stuck in negotiations.

Though the delay provides them with extra time, Trump’s executive order also initiates a more intense crackdown. It goes after trade partners that didn’t provide what Washington considers “sufficient concessions.” The order also imposes severe penalties on merchandise redirected to avoid tariffs. Essentially, Trump’s new order combines a strategic delay with a forceful enforcement effort.

Alleviation for Some, Burden on Others

The White House said the new tariffs will now come into effect next Friday, rather than August 1. This seven-day delay is intended to leave time for last-minute negotiations. For countries such as India, Canada, and Mexico, still striving for an agreement, this offers a thin but precious window of opportunity.

But it came with a rider. Nations that have committed “meaningful trade and security offers” remain open to tariffs until agreements are signed. For others, particularly those with insufficient proposals, the full brunt of new tariffs will hit.

Crackdown Through Anti-Evasion Measures

Trump’s new order does not end at tariffs. The order imposes strict anti-transhipment measures. If US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) determines that merchandise is routed through third nations to avoid tariffs, the shipment will be slapped with a high duty of 40%.

On top of this, CBP can impose additional penalties. This crackdown targets exporters who use backdoor portals to get into the American market.

Tariffs Make America Great & Rich Again

Trump is unapologetic. He still stands up for his trade war as an economic victory. On Truth Social, he stated tariffs are making America “great and rich again.” He attributed “crooked politicians” with permitting unfair practices in trade against the US.

Now, by Trump’s account, his administration is turning back decades of economic harm. “The tide has completely turned,” he stated. “America has successfully countered this onslaught.”

India Confronts Growing Threat from US Tariff Policy

India is caught in a squeeze. It has failed to sign a trade agreement within the 90 days and now risks full exposure to the new tariffs. Even the anti-transhipment clause would strike Indian exporters on third-country routes.

Domestic politics could put further discussions on hold as elections are approaching for both countries. Trump’s tariff gambit is no longer purely economic—it’s become a high-risk geopolitical pressure tool.
