In a surprising moment of political alignment, U.S. President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani stood together on Friday with a shared goal: forcing utility giant Con Edison to lower its rates. The rare point of agreement emerged during a White House meeting between the Republican president and the incoming democratic socialist mayor.

What Did the Two Leaders Agree On?

They focused mainly on the high cost of living, particularly expensive utility bills. President Trump called for immediate action, stating, “We have to get Con Edison to start lowering the rates.” Mayor-elect Mamdani agreed, saying, “Absolutely.” Since affordability shaped both their campaigns, it became one rare issue where their very different platforms overlap.

Why is This Agreement So Significant?

This agreement is especially striking because the two leaders are usually on opposite ends of the political spectrum. President Trump and Mayor-elect Mamdani have openly criticized each other and disagree on major issues such as immigration, public safety, and U.S. support for Israel’s actions in Gaza. Their rare moment of alignment on utility rates shows how strongly rising prices and everyday household costs are shaping political priorities for leaders across the board.

How Did Con Edison Respond?

Faced with this unusual bipartisan pressure, the utility company issued a conciliatory statement. Con Edison said it welcomed the “opportunity to partner with the Mayor-elect on solutions that make New York affordable for everyone.” The company acknowledged that “affordability is a critical issue,” signaling its awareness of the mounting political and public demand for action on rising energy costs.
