Before the high-stakes meeting between United States President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump has hinted how he will support Ukraine in having its occupied land returned to it. Delivering a statement at a press conference held at the White House, Trump went on to hold that regaining Ukraine’s occupied land would form a main theory of the deliberation with Putin.

“Russia has gotten a significant part of Ukraine, prime territory,” Trump said. “We’ll try and get some of that territory back for Ukraine.”

The meeting is set for August 15 in Alaska and marks the first face-to-face meeting by the two heads of state following the inception of the current conflict in 2022. This can be a really important moment in any ongoing effort to resolve the conflict.

Looming Possibilities of Land Exchanges and Diplomacy

Over the course of deliberation, Trump hinted at the possibility of a land swap with Ukraine and even heightened the point when he discussed such a major peace deal.

“The next meeting will be with Zelensky and Putin, or Zelensky and Putin and me. I’ll be there if they need me,” Trump concluded to the press, reiterating his interest in negotiating cessation towards peace.

Nevertheless, the notion of land swap is firmly opposed within Ukraine as it pertains to the involuntary giving up of any territorial control to the Russians. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky swiftly dismissed any such deal when the Americans showed him the list of Putin’s ideas for talks.

Zelensky, who has persistently campaigned for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, could not consider anything about it.

Challenges with Counter-arguments to Territorial

Reports reaching the United States have shown that Putin may be willing to stop engaging in an offensive on account of Ukraine giving him either some or all of the territories in dispute, including eastern Donbas and Crimea-both of which have Polish and Ukrainian roots, not Russian. Meanwhile, the proposal was delivered to the Americans through Trump’s Special Envoy in a recent Moscow dialogue.

One prerequisite for peace, as presented by the Russian assumptions, was an actual agreement by Ukraine to give recognition of Crimea and Donbas as part of the Russian Federation. Another condition needs the end of enlargement of NATO, especially given the blockage of Ukraine joining NATO as part of the same agreement of ceasefire.

However, since Ukraine has not yet openly expressed its own desires on this subject, retaining most concessions from the unrealistically complex may consist of demands for peace.

Complicated Times Ahead

The forthcoming Trump-Putin summit comes at a time when the geopolitics are very high, and negotiations would hugely underscore highly difficult steps.

Power politics will remain at strong odds-Russia with its territorial ambitions, Ukraine’s refusal to hand over lands, and the international community’s reservations regarding NATO, making the path to peace even trickier, calling for careful and sustained diplomacy. The meeting in Alaska might either break or deepen the nexus of the conflict engulfing the region.
