Todd Snider spent three decades shaping the soul of Americana with the kind of grit, humour and honesty few artists ever master. His death at 59 has left a striking silence in the music world. A man with a wandering spirit and sharp storytelling, Snider’s voice carried satire and vulnerability often within the same breath.
Born in Portland and raised in Beaverton, Snider drifted through California and Texas before settling into the Nashville scene. He learned early that stories mattered as much as melodies and that truth could be delivered with a grin.
Snider married painter Melita Osheowitz in the late 1990s after the two met during rehab and Years later, his marriage would end with a chapter he rarely talked about publicly.
His career really took flight in the 1990s, first winning crowds in Memphis, then carving his place into Nashville's East Side. Snider blended folk, country, blues and satire earning a reputation as the musician who could make you laugh one moment and stop you cold the next.

Over several decades and record labels, Snider produced a list of influential albums: "Songs for the Daily Planet," "East Nashville Skyline" and "The Devil You Know." His body of work was a library of social commentary, personal reflection and sharp musical craft.
Snider had appeared in a number of independent films and mockumentaries, often playing hyperbolic versions of himself. "East Nashville Tonight" and "Peace Queer: The Movie" reflected his willingness to blur art and performance.
He appeared regularly on late-night television and music programs, including "Late Night with Conan O'Brien," "Austin City Limits," and "The Tonight Show."
His catalog includes fan favorites like "Play a Train Song," "Alright Guy," "Beer Run," and "The Ballad of the Kingsmen." Many became staples among Americana artists who covered his work.
Snider wrote a memoir full of stories and reflections from years on the road that were decidedly offbeat.
