Today, this One WTC is not only the tallest building in the United States but also in the Western Hemisphere.
The new One World Trade Center opened on November 3, 2014, in Lower Manhattan, New York City, and it stands at the site of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. For many, the tower represents resilience, recovery, and hope. But critics questioned whether rebuilding on the same spot was safe or emotionally sensitive.
Today, this One WTC is not only the tallest building in the United States but also in the Western Hemisphere. It rises taller than the original Twin Towers. The tower stands as both a commercial hub and a monument. But how does the US keep it secure?
One WTC is also called the Freedom Tower. It does not copy the design of the old Twin Towers, which were identical 110-storey structures. Instead, it is a single, unique skyscraper.
The building is part of a larger complex. The site includes 2 WTC, 3 WTC, 4 WTC, and 7 WTC. Each has its own purpose and design. One World Trade Center stands 1,776 feet tall, which includes its spire, and the number 1776 symbolises the year the US Declaration of Independence was signed.

Rebuilding the site had deep symbolic meaning. Supporters saw it as defiance against terrorism and proof of recovery. The complex has also revitalised Lower Manhattan. Companies such as Condé Nast moved in as early tenants in 2014.
The site also houses the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. Twin reflecting pools sit on the footprints of the old North and South Towers. They serve as reminders of the 2,977 victims of the 9/11 attacks.
The decision to build again on the same site was not without opposition. Critics argued it was insensitive to construct offices where so many died. Some demanded that the whole area should remain a memorial space.
Security was another major concern. The World Trade Center remains a symbolic target. Security breaches have also added to the worries. In 2014, a teenager slipped past guards to climb One WTC. Base jumpers also breached defences, raising questions about safety.
The process of rebuilding the site took nearly 15 years. The construction of One World Trade Center alone cost around $4 billion.
The project faced multiple delays due to political disagreements, financial issues, and disputes over design. Some architects and residents wanted the original Twin Towers rebuilt. Others wanted a simpler design to reduce the risk of making the site a target again.

The new tower is among the most secure buildings in the world. Authorities added multi-layered security systems to their design and daily operations. While some measures remain secret, many are known.
Security at the WTC complex involves constant police and federal monitoring.
The area has advanced CCTV systems, motion sensors, and licence plate readers. These link with the NYPD’s Domain Awareness System for real-time tracking.
One WTC has 73 elevators. Many are designed for rapid evacuations and for use by first responders. Fireproofing, smoke control, and emergency lighting meet modern high-rise safety standards.
Agencies conduct regular drills to prepare for incidents. The Port Authority works with private security firms inside the towers to align safety measures. Public awareness campaigns like “If You See Something, Say Something” encourage vigilance.
