An off-duty US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agent was shot late Saturday night during an attempted robbery in Riverside Park, Manhattan. The New York Police Department (NYPD) confirmed the incident and said it does not appear connected to the agent’s official duties.

Suspect Identified, Hospitalised

Police have identified 21-year-old Miguel Mora as a person of interest in the case. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Mora was taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds that matched injuries seen in surveillance footage. Authorities expect to formally arrest him soon.

What Happened at the Scene

The CBP agent was sitting near the waterfront when two men rode up on a scooter. One of them pointed a gun at him. Realising he was being robbed, the agent pulled out his own firearm. A gunfight broke out. During the exchange, the agent was shot in the face and forearm, while one of the suspects was also injured. Both men fled immediately after the shooting.

Trump Reacts to the Incident

US President Donald Trump responded to the shooting on Truth Social. He wrote, "Last night, in New York City, an incredible CBP Officer was shot in the face by an Illegal Alien Monster freed into the Country under Joe Biden. He was apprehended at the Border in April 2023 but, instead of being deported, was RELEASED. The CBP Officer bravely fought off his attacker, despite his wounds, demonstrating enormous Skill and Courage."

Surveillance Video Aids Investigation

Investigators said the entire incident was recorded on CCTV. The footage helped them link Mora to the crime. Later, he showed up at Bronx Care Hospital with injuries that matched the video evidence.

Mayor Visits Injured Officer

New York City Mayor Eric Adams visited the wounded CBP agent in the hospital. However, officials have not yet released details about the officer’s current condition.

Mora’s Immigration Status and Criminal Record

Commissioner Tisch revealed that Miguel Mora is in the United States illegally. He reportedly crossed into the country through Arizona in 2023. Mora already has a troubling criminal history, including two arrests for domestic violence. He also has an active warrant for skipping a court date and is wanted in connection with a robbery in December 2024 and a stabbing incident from January 2025.

Mora Now in Police Custody

Authorities are holding Mora at Lincoln Hospital following surgery. He remains under police watch as the investigation continues.
