Next Set of Tsunami Waves Can Be Up to 10 Feet in Hawaii, Officials Warn

Tsunami triggered by 8.8 quake off Russia hits Hawaii and Pacific coasts. The next set of waves is expected to be up to 10 feet. Officials urge evacuation as alerts face scrutiny.

A huge 8.8-magnitude earthquake off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula early Wednesday night triggered a powerful tsunami wave across the Pacific. Hawaii and several US coastal areas now expect waves measuring up to 10 feet. Water surges were confirmed in Maui and Oahu by authorities.

Evacuations are taking place from Russia to Japan and California. At least one fatality has been reported. The US National Weather Service and NOAA continue to issue advisories, but the incident also raises new questions about the condition of early warning systems in the Pacific.

Waves Already Pounding Hawaii and US West Coast

In Hawaii, officials reported that tsunami waves are coming in about every 12 minutes. The strongest waves are predicted to arrive within the next several hours. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) verified waves above five feet in Kahului, Maui, and close to four feet in Haleiwa, Oahu. Governor Josh Green called on residents on the coast to flee or relocate to upper levels.

This is not just for one beach or an island. The tsunami has the potential to go all the way around the Hawaiian chain,” Green explained. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said there is wave activity already along Russian, Japanese, Alaskan, and Hawaiian coastlines.

California & Pacific Nations Prepare for Further Waves

In California, tsunami alerts are still active. Evacuation notices were ordered by the Monterey County Sheriff’s Department for people on board boats in Breakwater Cove and Coast Guard Pier. Government officials issued a warning of the “arrival of a series of strong tsunami waves and hazardous currents” in the early morning.

Japan issued evacuation alerts for 1.9 million individuals in 21 coastal areas. Wave heights of more than 1.3 meters (4.3 feet) have hit the nation. A 58-year-old woman drowned in Mie prefecture while attempting to evacuate. In Fukushima, nuclear safety personnel implemented emergency measures. Nissan suspended production at some plants.

Russia’s Far East was severely affected. Five-meter (16-foot) high waves hit the port of Severo-Kurilsk. Boats were destroyed, and houses were ruined. A state of emergency was declared by the authorities. Kamchatka Governor Vladimir Solodov referred to it as “the strongest quake in decades.”

One of the Strongest Earthquakes in History

The earthquake struck at 03:17 local time near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky at a depth of just 19.3 kilometres (12 miles). The US Geological Survey first measured the quake at 8.0, but later upgraded it to 8.8.

This ranks among the six strongest earthquakes ever recorded. Aftershocks followed immediately. One measured 6.9. In Kamchatka, residents ran for safety. “It felt like the walls could collapse at any moment,” said Yaroslav, 25, who fled his building.

Tsunami Warnings Extended Across Pacific Rim

The US Tsunami Warning System has issued warnings as far as Alaska’s Aleutian Islands, the northern California coast, and even nations such as Chile, Peru, Mexico, Indonesia, and Taiwan.

The agency cautioned that 3- to 9-foot waves would be lethal. Waves have already hit five meters in Severo-Kurilsk. President Donald Trump called on Hawaiians to be serious and act immediately.

Ageing Alert Systems Face Renewed Scrutiny

Although the tsunami alerts have reached most areas in time, numerous coastal specialists are concerned about alert fatigue and out-of-date infrastructure. Some harbours in Hawaii and California remain equipped with analogue loudspeakers and out-of-date mobile push systems. Communication breakdown between islands or counties would be lethal during prolonged wave surges.

Experts add that the Pacific’s increasing vulnerability to climate-enhanced ocean activity requires quicker, smarter, and more interconnected warning networks. “This occurrence should serve as an eye-opener,” stated a NOAA spokesman who preferred not to be identified.

Additional Waves Possible for Hours

Officials cautioned that the tsunami is not yet finished. The Pacific Ocean could still produce waves for over 24 hours. Powerful currents and flooding are still possible on coasts from Hawaii to California.

People have been encouraged to avoid beaches and harbours and obey evacuation directions closely. The Pacific is still under close observation as the threat continues to develop.
