A series of shootings in Fayette County, Kentucky, left several individuals injured on Sunday, including a state police trooper, officials say. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear and Kentucky State Police acknowledged the incidents in a statement that was posted on X.
The violence started at Blue Grass Airport in Lexington, where a Kentucky State Police trooper was wounded during a scuffle with a suspect. The trooper's identity has not been revealed and is undergoing medical treatment. The suspect then abandoned the scene, leading to a law enforcement manhunt.
The suspect drove around 17 miles (27 kilometers) to Richmond Road Baptist Church, where yet another shooting took place. Several people were reported injured at the church, and emergency responders quickly reached the area to treat the victims.
Kentucky State Police, in a coordinated effort with the Lexington Police Department, subsequently verified that the suspect was taken into custody at the church. Authorities said the man was killed, but details about the circumstances surrounding the suspect's death have yet to be reported.
"Please pray for all who have been impacted by these acts of senseless violence," Governor Beshear posted on X, sending condolences and well-wishes to the victims and their families.
Neither the Lexington Police Department nor Kentucky State Police have made any further statements or replied to media requests for information on the incident. An effort to speak to Richmond Road Baptist Church was also unsuccessful.
At the same time, Blue Grass Airport tweeted an update on X at around 1 p.m. ET (1700 GMT), where it said although a police investigation was ongoing on a part of the airport road, all flights and airport activity were going on as usual.
The probe continues, with police trying to figure out the motive of the attacks and the extent of the injuries.
