Melania on Claims She Married Donald for Money
A resurfaced interview reveals how Melania Trump previously reacted to accusations that she was only dating Donald Trump for money. Then-28-year-old Melania was dating then-52-year-old Donald Trump, whose age difference sparked many eyebrows and made people wonder why she was dating him.
"You know, the people, they don't know me," Melania firmly replied during the interview. "People who talk like this, they don't know me."
When the interviewer mentioned, "Well, you don't see many 26-year-old supermodels on the arm of a 53-year-old car mechanic," Melania had a tart response. "You know what, you can't sleep or to hug or to talk with beautiful things, with beautiful apartment, beautiful plane, beautiful cars, beautiful houses, you can't do that."
"You might feel really empty," she went on. "And if someone said, 'You're with the man because he's famous and rich,' they don't know me."
Donald Trump asked Melania to marry him in 2004, and the pair wed the next year. Their son, Barron, was born in 2006.
In the same interview, Melania was questioned whether she could picture herself as First Lady one day. "Yes, I would be very traditional like Jackie Kennedy. I will support him, I will do a lot of social obligations," she responded. "I would stand by [my] man."
Throughout her stay at the White House, Melania was frequently criticized for what people thought was a lack of political engagement and public presence. In response to this in an interview with Fox & Friends prior to Donald's 2025 inauguration, she explained, "Maybe some people, they see me as just a wife of the president, but I'm standing on my own two feet, independent. I have my own thoughts. I have my own yes and no."
"I don't necessarily agree with what my husband is doing or saying, and that's fine," she continued. "I offer him my advice, and sometimes he takes it, sometimes he doesn't, and that's fine."
Looking back on her previous days as First Lady, Melania said, "I feel I was always me the first time [in the White House] too," but suggested that the public "didn't accept" or "get" her during Donald's first term.
