The political shake-up in Washington intensified on Friday after Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene—who recently pushed a bill to end the H-1B visa programme—announced she would resign from the US House in January.
Her decision comes at a moment of escalating tensions with US President Donald Trump, turning a once-solid alliance into a dramatic public feud with major implications for immigration policy and the MAGA movement.
Marjorie Taylor Greene Steps Down After Rift With Trump
Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, known for pushing a bill to end the H-1B visa programme, has announced she will resign from the US House of Representatives in January. Her decision comes just days after a very public and bitter clash with US President Donald Trump.
Marjorie Greene, once one of Trump’s closest allies, had aligned herself with him on immigration, the January 6 riots, and the MAGA movement. But tensions escalated after she introduced a bill to scrap the H-1B visa programme, which benefits thousands of Indian tech professionals.
Trump reacted aggressively. He withdrew his endorsement, called her a “lunatic”, and openly criticised her approach. The fallout quickly turned into a full-blown political fight.
Marjorie Taylor Greene Anti–H-1B Push
Marjorie Greene proposed ending the H-1B programme just two days after Trump defended it in a Fox News interview. He argued that the US must bring in skilled talent from abroad to fill labour shortages.
When the interviewer claimed the US had “plenty of talented workers,” Trump instantly disagreed. He said, “No, you don’t. You don’t have certain talents… You can’t take people off an unemployment line and say, ‘I’m going to put you into a factory where we’re going to make missiles.’”
His support for foreign students also angered MAGA hardliners. Many within that faction routinely attack both H-1B and F-1 visas, claiming they replace American workers.
Political analysts believe Greene attempted to rebrand “America First” without Trump. Her bill appeared to challenge Trump directly, especially as Indian workers receive nearly 70% of all H-1B visas every year.
Trump Calls Greene a ‘Ranting Lunatic’
After Greene’s bill and her escalating criticism, Trump’s patience snapped. On Truth Social, he wrote, “I am withdrawing my support and endorsement of ‘Congresswoman’ Marjorie Taylor Greene.”
He accused her of doing nothing but “COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN!” and mocked her for being upset that he no longer takes her calls. Trump added, “I can’t take a ranting lunatic’s call every day.”
Reports also suggest Trump was irritated by Greene’s repeated demands to release the Epstein files. He initially dismissed the issue as a “Democrat hoax.” But he later shifted, urging Republicans to vote for the files’ release.
Greene Attempts to Redefine MAGA Without Trump
In a CNN interview, Greene took a confrontational stand. When asked if Trump still represented the MAGA movement, she said, “I can say that promoting H-1B visas to replace American jobs… those are not America first positions.”
She also criticised Trump’s global travel and said she wanted “Air Force One to be parked and stay home” so the White House could focus on a domestic agenda.
Greene has also broken with many Republicans on other issues. She was the first GOP lawmaker to say there is a genocide in Gaza. She has also pushed aggressively for the release of the Epstein files.
Greene’s Exit Signals Emerging MAGA Power Struggle
Greene’s resignation highlights a deeper shift inside the MAGA movement. Her departure signals that Trump loyalists are no longer guaranteed political survival if they challenge the President’s revised immigration and foreign-policy positions.
Her exit also opens space for new hard-right candidates who may align more closely with Trump’s repositioned stance on skilled immigration.
