Mayor-elect of New York Zohran Mamdani’s first visit to the White House was expected to be tense; instead, what happened was an unexpectedly calm exchange between two leaders who had continuously attacked each other for months with harsh political words.

Even after the unusually friendly tone, Mamdani made clear that his view of President Donald Trump has not changed.

Mamdani Reiterates His Previous Statements

He told NBC News he still thinks Trump fits the terms he used earlier, such as “fascist” and “despot.” For Mamdani, politics required honesty about disagreement and he added he wouldn’t revise statements for convenience.

His frankness contrasted with the warmth from the meeting at the White House, but to Mamdani, consistency was more important than optics.

A Viral Moment at the White House

The odd rapport between the two leaders took center stage as, during their joint appearance, a reporter asked Mamdani whether he still viewed Trump as a fascist. Before Mamdani could respond, Trump jumped in, telling him, “That’s OK. You can just say it.”

The lighthearted moment went viral, showcasing a strangely collaborative tone after a campaign season filled with hostility. Trump had called Mamdani a “Communist lunatic,” and Mamdani had promised to be the president’s “worst nightmare.”

Productive Conversation Despite Sharp Political Differences

Mamdani said afterward that the Oval Office discussion was candid but constructive. The meeting kept returning to issues he ran on the high cost of living, childcare concerns, grocery prices and increasing utility burdens.

Trump who once threatened to withdraw federal support from the city-struck a friendlier tone, congratulating Mamdani’s victory and saying he thought the mayor-elect could do the job. He pledged federal cooperation to help restore safety and stability in New York.

Cooperation With Caution

The meeting suggests that despite major ideological gaps, both leaders recognize the need for collaboration. Mamdani has positioned himself as someone willing to take on the administration but also ready to negotiate when it comes to New York’s needs.

As he prepares to take office, the question is whether this fragile political truce can survive the city’s upcoming challenges.
