Residents across the South Bay started Wednesday with a jolt when a series of earthquakes rippled near Gilroy, southeast of San Jose.

According to the US Geological Survey, the first and strongest quake struck at approximately 6:15 a.m. and was revised with a magnitude of 4.0 from an initial 4.3. Within minutes, two other smaller quakes struck in the same region, measuring 2.7 and 3.9. Despite being brief, the series of shakes was felt across a wide swath of the region, extending north into San Francisco.

Earthquake Safety: Do’s & Don’ts You Should Always Follow

Do’s

  • Repair deep cracks in walls, ceilings and foundations. Seek expert help if you notice structural damage.
  • Secure overhead lighting fixtures properly.
  • Follow BIS building codes for your region when constructing or renovating.
  • Fix shelves firmly to the wall.
  • Keep heavy items on lower shelves to prevent them from falling.
  • Protect yourself during shaking by dropping to the ground, taking cover under sturdy furniture and holding on.
  • If furniture is not available, shield your head and face with your arms and crouch in an interior corner.
  • Use safe spots such as door lintels, sturdy tables or beds for protection.

Don’ts

  • Don’t run during the shaking and stay where you are until it stops.
  • Don’t stand near buildings, trees, streetlights or power lines when outdoors.
  • Don’t stay close to glass, windows, outside walls or objects that may fall.
  • Impact Felt Across the Region

The strongest shaking was reported around Gilroy and the broader South Bay, where the tremors startled early risers but caused no immediate damage. No significant disruptions were reported by emergency officials and local authorities.

Flights at San Jose Mineta International Airport were still on schedule, according to the FAA and FlightAware, which helps to ease concerns about possible impacts on travel.

Shortly after the first shock, residents took to social media, describing sudden jerks and brief vibrations. While many mentioned that this one was stronger than the minor tremors of the past, most reports indicated a very short event with no structural issues arising.

Why These Quakes Matter

California certainly has had its fair share of seismic activity, but the rapid sequence here serves again to underscore the importance of readiness. Earthquakes, even moderate ones, often create local hazards, particularly for older buildings or loose soil in areas.

While this set did no damage, it's another reminder for communities to review safety plans and check emergency supplies and be cognizant of fault activity in their vicinity.

Events like Wednesday's tremors keep seismic preparedness in the forefront, a reminder that the ground can shift in an instant with little warning.
