JD Vance’s Immigration Remark Sparks Backlash, Ignites ‘Send Usha Back’ Controversy

The backlash against Vance's remarks has been especially sharp because of his family background. His wife, Usha Vance, is the daughter of Indian immigrants, which, to many, has made his rhetoric against mass migration deeply contradictory.

US Vice President JD Vance has generated significant controversy with his recent remarks on immigration. The ntroversy erupted after Vance took to X to state that mass migration constitutes the “theft of the American Dream,” taking away opportunities from American workers. He further accused all studies disagreeing with his stance of being funded by those benefiting from the present system.

Will Usha Vance also in US Immigrants List

The backlash against Vance’s remarks has been especially sharp because of his family background. His wife, Usha Vance, is the daughter of Indian immigrants, which, to many, has made his rhetoric against mass migration deeply contradictory.

Author and political commentator Wajahat Ali wrote directly to Vance’s post with a sharp rejoinder: “That means you have to send Usha, her Indian family, and your biracial kids back to India.”

This critique uniquely brings attention to the questionable hypocrisy of an anti-immigrant stance for a man whose family benefits from such immigration.

Vance said his position is that controlled, merit-based immigration is needed, but the criticism about his wife’s heritage has lingered at the forefront.

Vice President Again Courted Controversy Over Immigration

This isn’t the first time that the vice president has courted controversy over identity and immigration. During an appearance on the New York Post podcast not long ago, Vance said it was “totally reasonable and acceptable” for Americans to want neighbors of the same race, language, or color of skin.

The remark, similar in some respects to rhetoric from his political mentor, President Donald Trump, helped fuel charges that his views foster division.

Current Immigration Rate in the US, per 1,000 People

The latest available data shows that the current net migration rate in the United States is approximately 8.23 per 1,000 people, indicating that more individuals are entering the country than leaving it.

Net migration reflects the difference between immigration and emigration per thousand members of the population. Although the rate remains positive, the overall foreign-born population in the U.S. has recently declined, dropping to around 51.9 million by mid-2025 from the previous peak of 53.3 million.

What are the Reasons Behind Immigration?

People move to the United States for several key reasons. One of the biggest factors is better job opportunities, as the U.S. offers higher salaries and a wide range of industries. Many also migrate for education, since American universities provide globally recognized degrees.
