A massive iceberg has drifted perilously near a Greenland village, prompting widespread online alarm as dramatic photos circulated. Local authorities have been monitoring the iceberg closely for weeks, reports the Daily Mail. While people have been warned, villagers still remain in hopes that it will drift away, although it remains in place at the moment.

Warnings and Safety Precautions in Place

Sharing a snapshot of the massive iceberg, an X user posted, “Innaarsuit, North Greenland: July 9, 2025. A massive iceberg is drifting close to the harbor near the Royal Greenland fish factory. Authorities urge caution: Avoid walking in large groups to the local store. Vulnerable residents should be extra careful. Boaters stay alert. Emergency teams are monitoring in case the iceberg breaks.”

Avannaata Municipality emergency services reissued the safety warnings.

"Emergency services urge families not to head towards the store in a group, while at the same time requesting people with mobility issues to exercise special caution when going towards the store," they informed the Daily Mail.

They also emphasized warning on water: "Emergency services also would like you to exercise caution when sailing both to and from the settlement. The emergency services know about the iceberg and are ready in case it splits apart."

Mixed Reactions on Social Media

Further images of the iceberg have emerged throughout social media, with both wonder and fear shown. Local resident Dennis Lehtonen commented on the developing situation:

This Monday, though, the iceberg returned to Innaarsuit and has since been (nearly) in the same spot ever since."

Due to the impending danger, he added, "The Avannaata Kommunia (North Greenland municipality) put out the official warning for the iceberg and we are closing the local fish factory where I work for the time being as well as the little shop."

When asked what villagers thought of the iceberg's arrival, Lehtonen said, "I have inquired amongst the locals what they think of the iceberg. There are some who say they are concerned, but there are lots of people who are sort or enthusiastic (like me)."
