The “resumé debate” was a significant theme in the race. Eric Adams directly attacked Mamdani’s perceived lack of traditional work experience. “I’ve learned this city from the bottom up. Mamdani focused on social services and activism prior to his election to the New York State Assembly in 2020. His most prominent role was as a foreclosure prevention housing counselor in Queens, where he helped low-income homeowners resist eviction and keep their homes. He also had a shorter stint as a financial counselor for Chhaya, a non-profit organization that works with the South Asian community in Queens.

After graduating from Bowdoin College in 2014, Mamdani’s early career was marked by brief roles in political advocacy outside of New York. He worked as an organizer for the group MoveOn in Seattle for four months. This was followed by a two-month period with the advocacy organization TexPIRG in Texas. A report from the New York Post highlighted that he was employed for approximately three years between his college graduation and his election to the State Assembly.
