
FBI raids target NBA Coach Chauncey Billups and Player Rozier, figures and organized crime in a nationwide illegal gambling and sports rigging crackdown (Photo: Pinterest)
On October 23, the FBI arrested over 25 persons in connection with illegal gambling and game manipulation. Of those arrested, NBA luminaries Chauncey Billups, head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers and guard Terry Rozier of the Miami Heat were included.
FBI Director Kash Patel noted that charges in the case included wire fraud, money laundering, solicitation to commit extortion and illegal gambling. The mob influence members of New York City's notorious Bonanno, Gambino and Genovese crime families, was also part of the investigation.
Joseph Nocella Jr., United States attorney described that the probe involved 31 persons alleged to have run a national effort to rig illegal poker games. Victims were said to have been enticed into underground games on the promise of celebrity attendance only to find themselves victims of a sophisticated scheme that allowed cheating.

Some of these included shuffling machines with the ability to read card sequences, barcoded decks and hidden cameras incorporated into the tables and fixtures. Further into the investigation the FBI discovered information as in player substitutions in NBA games was used to place bets on basketball games.
The NBA immediately took action regarding the scandal, notifying that both Chauncey Billups and Terry Rozier would be placed on leave awaiting further investigation. The league underlined the commitment to the integrity of the game by stating, "We take these allegations with the utmost seriousness and will fully cooperate with authorities."
Billups had coached the season opener of the Trail Blazers on October 22 while Rozier had missed the recent Miami Heat game against the Orlando Magic in connection with the probe.
