Renewed talks about U.S. President Donald Trump contemplating a new global alliance he calls Core-5 have set debate aflame among all corners on earth. The alliance will comprise members United States, Russia, China, India and Japan.
Once it sets sail, clearly it will make an impact as it might end up as the most influential alliance ever made. It will make a joke out of the G7 and will set a new world politics that will define earth politics for decades.
Radical Shift in Global Power Politics
The Core-5 proposal emerged via reports quoting Defence One, which highlighted that it emerged within an expanded form of the US National Security Strategy. Despite the White House stating it doesn’t exist, there are grounds within Trump’s previous statements at a G7 Summit that make these speculations.
Within these statements, he made it clear that he agreed Russia and China have a rightful place at the bargaining table, deviating from previous Western foreign policy, which relied heavily on Europe.
Trump’s Core-5 Vision
At the G7, Trump argued that it would be a big mistake to exclude Russia back in 2014 and that it would have served as a preventative factor against ongoing conflicts.

Trump’s stance and actions are based on an understanding that large nations should be brought together on the same platform and that these nations have a role to play in contriving a solution to various crises taking place around the world, not least within the Middle East. The nations that could have an impact would include the US, Russia, China, India and Japan.

First Agenda: Stability in the Middle East
It appears that amongst its earliest mandates, the Core-5 would be tasked with normalization efforts between Israel and Saudi Arabia. Trump’s plan to develop these Abraham Accords would play an integral role in his foreign policy agenda within his second term. Having Saudi Arabia as a part of it would be an enormous foreign policy success.

A Major Departure from US-Europe Alignment
True, Core-5 would be a radical shift from Washington’s historical practice of partnering with Europeans. The recent National Security Strategy recognised tensions within US-European relationships and a willingness to shore up relationships with Russia.
All these and statements made by President Trump himself signal an emerging willingness to deal more directly with large powers outside of the West.
India’s Role within the Framework
Despite some tension with regard to tariffs and oil imports from Russia, it would appear that there is some sort of mending of fences happening currently between India and the USA. The recent phone call between Narendra Modi and Trump, who have had several conversations recently, would attest to that.
The inclusion of India within Core-5 would be India’s biggest strategic upgrade so far and would put India at the heart of a new center of gravity beyond traditional criteria based on economic and democratic values as set out within G7.
