US President Donald Trump addressed the media during a white house event on Wednesday. During this session, he spoke about his recent conversations with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and how he reassured the former regarding a step away from oil trade with Russia.
Trump Claims Narendra Modi Agreed to Cooperate
While addressing the reporters, the US president was vocal about his dislike of India’s Oil trade with Russia. He spoke about how India’s ongoing trade not only upsets him but also negatively affects the US’s efforts to corner Russia financially.
“So I was not happy that India was buying oil, and he assured me today that they will not be buying oil from Russia,” Trump told reporters in the White House.
Trump Spoke on India as an Ally: “He (Modi) is a Good Friend”
During the event, Trump was asked about whether he considers India a reliable Ally. He responded to the question by calling Modi a “good friend.” he further shared that the statement regarding ending oil trade with Russia was made two days ago.
“He’s a friend of mine. We have a great relationship. He just said that two days ago, as you know,” Trump told reporters.

Trump Expects China to Follow India’s Lead
Trump called Modi’s reassurance a “big step,” before voicing his expectations from China to follow India’s lead.
“That’s a big step. Now we’re going to get China to do the same thing.”
This is another move from America into economically isolating Russia by cutting off one of its key revenue streams, by forcing India and China to cut trade with Moscow through its tariff policies.
India’s Step Away From Russia Oil Trade
The statements given by the US President have not been confirmed or denied by any government official yet. However, if true, a move away from oil trade with Russia can mark the beginning of another chapter in India-Russia relations. As of now, the two countries have been great allies that have maintained healthy relations over the years.
However, India’s move away from trade with Russia, all to side with Russia, can negatively impact the two countries’ decades-long relations. The move marks a win for the US as they constantly rally against Russia, while shunning their invasion of Ukraine, which has cost thousands of lives.
