A US woman aged 57 was hospitalized after the liver enzymes shot up to 70 times higher than normal. The reason was traced to turmeric supplements she started taking daily after seeing an Instagram doctor endorsing their anti-inflammatory properties. She reported nausea, tiredness, abdominal discomfort, and darker-colored urine within weeks, doctors cautioned her she was close to liver failure and needing a transplant.
Specialists are now warning against caution with turmeric supplements, particularly in large dosages or without the guidance of a doctor.
Turmeric in Food Is Safe, But Supplements Are Not the Same
Dr Punit Singla, liver transplant expert at Marengo Asia Hospitals, explained that the liver responds negatively upon exposure to large dosages of turmeric. “Everyone metabolizes differently, some are more susceptible to liver toxicity, that’s why self-supplementation is dangerous,” he said.
Turmeric in its whole state, consumed in foods, is safe, and 1.5 to 3 grams daily—or roughly half to one teaspoon—is sufficient to provide antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects with no adverse effects.
Curcumin Concentration in Supplements Can Be Excessive
The majority of turmeric capsules include just curcumin extract, the molecule that gives turmeric its bright yellow color and medicinal action. This extract can have up to 95% curcumin, in contrast to merely 3% in natural turmeric.
Experts across all health sectors concur that 500-2000 mg of curcumin daily is typically safe if recommended. But unregulated supplements can go above this level, causing drug-induced liver injury (DILI).
Who Should Avoid Turmeric Supplements Completely
Those with pre-existing conditions like fatty liver, alcoholic liver disease, or any liver disorder are required to avoid taking turmeric supplements. They are more likely to develop liver failure if they are subjected to high curcumin. In 2023, research affirmed these risks.
In addition, when you consume turmeric together with black pepper, its absorption boosts. You might want to include liver function tests for those taking it.
Early Signs of Liver Toxicity You Shouldn’t Ignore
Excess consumption of turmeric can darken the urine, and result in fatigue, stomach fullness, drowsiness, and gastrointestinal distress. These are signs of early liver strain. If this happens, a doctor must be consulted and liver function analyzed urgently.
