US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday (September 11) that conservative activist Charlie Kirk will be posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honour. The announcement came a day after Kirk was fatally shot during a public event in Utah.
Trump Pays Tribute to Charlie Kirk
Speaking at a Pentagon event, President Trump praised the 31-year-old activist as one of the most influential conservative voices of his generation. “Charlie was an inspiration to millions, especially young people,” Trump said. “His courage and the message he shared will continue to impact lives for years to come.”
The Medal of Freedom, usually given to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the nation, will now honour Kirk’s role in shaping conservative activism and youth movements in the US.

Assassination During Public Event
Charlie Kirk was assassinated on Wednesday (September 10) while addressing a gathering in Utah. Eyewitnesses reported that a gunman jumped from a rooftop, fired multiple shots, and fled immediately after the attack.
Utah Department of Public Safety Commissioner Beau Mason confirmed that Kirk died at the scene. He described the suspect as appearing to be of college age and said investigators had obtained images of the individual. “We are confident we will locate and apprehend him,” Mason stated.
FBI Investigation Underway
The FBI confirmed that the shooter’s high-powered rifle was recovered in a wooded area near the site of the attack. Special Agent Robert Bohls said the weapon is undergoing forensic analysis. Investigators also found a footwear impression and a forearm imprint at the scene, which are being examined for leads.
“This was clearly a targeted attack,” Bohls told reporters. He added that while authorities have images of the suspect, they are withholding facial details until the investigation progresses further. “We’ll release that shortly,” he noted.
