Candace Owens, a right-wing media personality, has stirred controversy once more by claiming that Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk was murdered. She posted on X, alleging that an Egyptian Air Force aircraft was involved in the incident. However, fact-checkers and users swiftly refuted this claim, pointing out a crucial mistake in her timeline.

What is Candace Owens’ Theory?

Candace Owens alleged that an Egyptian Air Force jet was involved in the death of Charlie Kirk. Kirk was fatally shot on September 10 while at an event at Utah Valley University. Owens pointed to the aircraft, with tail number SU-BTT, which she said flew out of Provo, Utah on the same day. She called this “no coincidence,” claiming the jet had visited a Nebraska army base in July and remained in Utah “until just after Charlie was assassinated.” She framed the murder as a potential “military operation” with international connections.

How Was the Conspiracy Theory Debunked?

The theory quickly unraveled when users on X identified a fundamental mistake. Owens had misread the flight tracking data’s time zone. She interpreted a 13:08 UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) departure as 1:08 p.m. local time in Utah. In reality, this translated to a 7:08 a.m. takeoff from Provo—several hours before Kirk was shot. A community note attached to her post confirmed the error, stating the plane’s movements did not align with the timeline of the crime. One user noted, “We just learned Candace Owens thought UTC stood for Utah Time.”

How Did Candace Owens Respond to the Debunking?

Even after facts showed that Candace Owens’ claims were untrue, she persisted in defending them. She called the correction a “Snopes-type debunking” and said it was proof of a “coordinated attempt to bury the truth.” In follow-up posts, she questioned who was on the flight’s manifest, continuing to imply a shadowy operation. Her refusal to acknowledge the factual error has been a focal point of the criticism against her.

What Do the Official Investigators Say?

Authorities in Provo, Utah, have officially denied Owens’ conspiracy theory. They’ve identified 22-year-old Tyler Robinson as the sole suspect, arrested and charged shortly after the crime. Investigators confirmed it was a single, local occurrence and discovered no evidence of a second suspect or outside connection.

What Does This Reveal About Candace Owens’ Position?

This incident highlights Candace Owens’ growing isolation from mainstream conservative circles. Once an important member of Turning Point USA, she parted ways with the group after disagreements with leaders like Charlie Kirk. Now, her spreading of a debunked story about a former coworker’s death has drawn criticism and highlighted her move toward extreme ideas.
