A tragic road accident claimed multiple lives in western Guatemala after a passenger bus plunged into a deep gorge. The crash left at least 15 people dead and 19 others injured, sending shockwaves across the region.

The incident occurred on the Inter-American Highway, a key route that connects several parts of the country. Authorities said the bus lost control and veered off the road before falling into the gorge.

Where the Accident Happened

The crash took place in the Solola Department, between kilometres 172 and 174 of the highway. This stretch is known for difficult driving conditions.

Officials said the area often experiences dense fog, which reduces visibility and increases the risk of accidents. Drivers frequently struggle to navigate the winding road, especially during early morning and late-night hours.

Rescue Teams Rush to the Scene

Emergency services arrived quickly after locals reported the accident. Firefighters and rescue workers climbed down into the gorge to reach the wreckage.

Rescue teams worked for hours to pull survivors from the damaged bus. Authorities transported the injured to nearby hospitals for urgent treatment.

Local firefighter spokesperson Leandro Amado confirmed the death toll, saying:

“Fifteen people have died in this traffic accident — 11 men, three women, and a minor.”

Injured Victims Receive Medical Care

Officials said 19 injured passengers were taken to hospitals near the crash site. Several victims suffered serious injuries, including fractures and head trauma.

Doctors continue to monitor the condition of those admitted. Authorities have not yet released details about the identities of the victims.

Images Show Scale of Destruction

Photos shared by emergency services showed the bus lying wrecked at the bottom of the gorge. Firefighters were seen using ropes and equipment to reach trapped passengers.

The images highlighted the severity of the crash and the challenging rescue operation.

Investigation Underway

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine what caused the accident. Officials will examine whether weather conditions, speed, or mechanical failure played a role.

Road safety experts have repeatedly warned about the dangers of this highway, especially during foggy conditions.

The crash has renewed calls for better safety measures on Guatemala’s highways. Locals urged authorities to improve signage, enforce speed limits, and enhance road monitoring to prevent future tragedies.
