US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that the United States will sell F-35 stealth fighter jets to India. This decision places India among a select group of nations with advanced stealth aircraft.
During a joint press conference with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the White House, Trump confirmed the deal. “Starting this year, we will be increasing military sales to India by many billions of dollars. We are also paving the way to ultimately provide India with the F-35 stealth fighters,” he stated.
This announcement comes as tensions rise in the Indo-Pacific region. China is becoming more aggressive, while Pakistan strengthens its ties with Beijing under President Xi Jinping. Recently, China introduced a new stealth fighter jet, and Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari visited China to deepen military cooperation.
China Unveils New Fighter Jet at Airshow China 2024
Meanwhile, China showcased a major aviation breakthrough at Airshow China 2024 in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province. The highlight of the event was the J-20S, the world’s first known two-seat fifth-generation stealth fighter jet. This demonstration signaled China’s progress in military aviation.
Strategic Move or Trade Balancing?
Despite the excitement, experts are divided on the reasons behind this deal. On one hand, some believe the sale strengthens India’s military capabilities. On the other hand, others argue it helps reduce the growing trade deficit between India and the US, especially as both countries impose heavy tariffs on each other’s goods.
Although further details about defence agreements remain undisclosed, one thing is clear—Indo-US defence ties are growing stronger.
Russia Offers Su-57 Production in India
At the same time, Russia has proposed manufacturing its Su-57 stealth fighter jet in India. On February 12, 2025, Reuters reported that both Russian and Indian officials confirmed the offer. This move highlights Moscow’s effort to deepen defence ties with New Delhi.
For decades, Russia has been India’s primary arms supplier. However, the Ukraine war has disrupted its weapons exports, pushing India to consider Western alternatives.
A Rosoboronexport spokesperson stated that production could begin this year if India approves. Moreover, a full transfer of technology would ensure smooth production despite Western sanctions on Russia.
Nevertheless, the Su-57 has faced challenges. A crash in 2019 delayed its development, and serial production only began in 2022.
Last year, Russia flew the Su-57 to an air show in Zhuhai, China. This move reinforced growing defence cooperation between Moscow and Beijing.
Aero India 2025: A Historic Showcase
Meanwhile, the Aero India 2025 event in Bengaluru made history. For the first time, two of the world’s most advanced stealth fighter jets—the Russian Su-57 and the American F-35 Lightning II—were displayed together.
According to the Indian defence ministry, the five-day event attracted global attention. On the first day, both jets performed impressive aerial demonstrations. The Su-57 showcased quick turns and short takeoff capabilities, while the F-35 demonstrated rapid acceleration and superior manoeuvrability.
India Strengthens Global Defence Ties
As India expands its defence partnerships, the presence of both aircraft at Aero India 2025 signals its growing strategic importance.
The Indian defence ministry described the Su-57 as “Russia’s premier stealth multi-role fighter” designed for air superiority and precision strikes. “Equipped with advanced avionics, supercruise capability, and stealth technology, it is making its debut at Aero India 2025. Visitors can expect high-speed aerial manoeuvres and tactical demonstrations that highlight the fighter’s agility, stealth, and firepower,” the ministry stated.
Similarly, the F-35 Lightning II was praised as “Lockheed Martin’s most widely deployed fifth-generation fighter” with “advanced stealth, unparalleled situational awareness, and networked combat capabilities.”
Clearly, India is becoming a key player in global defence and aerospace collaborations.
India Boosts Air Force Amid Regional Threats
Meanwhile, China is rapidly expanding its air force. In response, India is working to strengthen its own fighter squadrons. Currently, the Indian Air Force has only 31 squadrons—far below the target of 42.
With both the US and Russia competing for defence deals, India’s role in global military strategy is more important than ever. Moving forward, its choices will shape international defence partnerships and regional security.
