David Lammy has been appointed the new Deputy PM and Justice Secretary of the United Kingdom, succeeding Angela Rayner. A senior Labour MP and a strong voice for social justice, Lammy brings experience, steadiness, and leadership to Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s cabinet.
His two roles put him at the center of the UK government, where he will oversee both policy decisions and justice system reforms.
David Lindon Lammy, 53, is the Labour MP for Tottenham, a seat he has held since 2000. He was born in London to Guyanese parents and studied law at SOAS, University of London. Lammy later became the first Black Briton to attend Harvard Law School, a major milestone in his education.
He is well-known for his work on social justice, equality, and racial fairness. One of his most important achievements is the 2017 Lammy Review, which looked into racial differences in the UK criminal justice system. The report highlighted issues in how people of different ethnic backgrounds are treated and remains an important part of his career.

After Angela Rayner resigned, David Lammy was chosen as Deputy PM. At the same time, he now runs the Justice Ministry. Having both roles gives him a key place in shaping the government’s policies and reforms.
“David Lammy brings experience and leadership at a crucial time,” Prime Minister Keir Starmer said when announcing the appointment.
David Lammy has worked in ministerial roles under former Prime Ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. More recently, he served as Foreign Secretary. Over more than twenty years in Parliament, he has gained a reputation for strong policy knowledge, excellent public speaking, and a firm commitment to justice and equality.
He has worked on several legislative reforms and social projects. Many consider him one of the most influential figures in the Labour Party.

Outside of politics, Lammy is an author and broadcaster. His book Tribes talks about identity, belonging, and the social challenges in modern Britain. He often speaks in public and contributes to debates on social justice, education, and government reforms. This has strengthened his public profile and influence.
Lammy takes on his new roles at a difficult time for the UK. After Rayner resigns, the administration needs experienced leaders to manage the remaining foreign and domestic concerns. Lammy's experience and calm personality are expected to offer stability while overseeing important changes to justice and policy.
Labour members believe Lammy can handle tough political situations, keep the party united, and manage government work while making necessary changes.

In the upcoming years, his leadership will be crucial in determining the political and social course of the UK.
