After a spate of mysterious drone sightings alarmed the entire country, the United Kingdom has despatched military personnel and sophisticated equipment to Belgium. It follows an official request from Belgium’s defence leadership amid fears that the incursions could be linked to Russia.
UK Chief of Defence Staff Sir Richard Knighton confirmed to the BBC that a ground based unit equipped to detect and neutralize unmanned aerial systems is now en route to support Belgian forces.
Rising Drone Menace in Europe
The urgency of the mission intensified after rogue drones forced a temporary shutdown of Zaventem Airport near Brussels on Thursday night. Similar incidents were reported near a Belgian military base, sparking security concerns and travel chaos.
Brussels Airlines confirmed that approximately 3,000 passengers were affected, with dozens of flights cancelled or diverted at a very high cost to the carrier. No damage was reported, but the disruptions brought to light Europe’s growing vulnerability to aerial threats that can evade traditional air defences.

Suspicion Points to Moscow
Authorities have not confirmed who is responsible for the incursions, but UK and German defence officials say Russia remains the most plausible suspect. Sir Richard Knighton described Moscow as the most pressing threat right now, citing its ongoing aggression in Ukraine and history of covert operations across Europe.
He also warned that the tactics deployed by Russia go well beyond the battlefield, involving cyberattacks, disinformation and sabotage all forms of hybrid warfare that demand collective vigilance.
Europe’s Response Unified
UK Defence Secretary John Healey underlined that the defense of European skies is a matter of allied unity. “Our strength lies in our alliances, collective resolve to deter and defend,” he said while reiterating Britain’s determination to continue cooperation with NATO member countries.

Germany also declared its readiness to provide anti-drone technology to Belgium upon Brussels’ request. Belgian Defence Minister Theo Francken recognized that there was no tangible evidence of Russian involvement, but the pattern of activity has turned what was initially a national issue into a continental one.
What is the Wider Security Implications
The incidents highlight a new era of security challenges in Europe, one in which silent, unmanned aircraft can disrupt infrastructure, threaten civilians and strain international relations.
As drones evolve into tools of both espionage and intimidation, coordinated defense will be critical. The UK’s rapid response is not just in solidarity with Belgium but a broader message to adversaries that Europe is watching the skies together.
