Memorabilia of the 1990s Surface

One of the time capsules buried by late Princess Diana in 1991 was removed from Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children (GOSH) in London to give way to a new cancer center. The capsule that had lain buried for almost 35 years held nostalgic things symbolizing life in the early 1990s such as a pocket TV, a Kylie Minogue music CD, tree seeds, a solar-powered calculator, British currency, a snowflake hologram, recycled paper, and a European passport.

Employees who participated in excavating the capsule consisted of personnel who were born in 1991 or were already working at GOSH when it was buried. The hospital described the extraction as a “unique moment connecting past and present generations of staff and patients.”

Staff Look Back at Nostalgia

Janet Holmes, a Senior Play Health Specialist working at GOSH in 1991, stated that her favorite was the pocket television. “When I saw the pocket TV, it brought back loads of memories. I had purchased one for my husband all those years ago, when he was working away as a coach driver. They cost an awful lot of money back then!” she remembered.

Rochana Redkar, a Clinical Fellow in the Paediatric Haematology Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, described the excavation as thrilling. “It was great to be involved in this event. I had only started working at GOSH six months earlier, and the capsule was buried the year I was born,” Redkar explained.

Princess Diana’s Lasting Legacy at GOSH

Princess Diana, president of GOSH in 1989, was renowned for her kindness and frequent visits to the hospital, which brought light into the lives of young patients and staff. She took part in the first time capsule ceremony in March 1991, when the foundation was laid for the Variety Club Building.

The time capsule discovery not only gives a peek into what the 1990s were like but also speaks of Diana’s lasting legacy on the hospital and her commitment towards pediatric care. The hospital intends to keep the contents for eternity alongside ongoing expansion to build a world-class cancer center for generations to come.
