British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has signed up to sit down with US President Donald Trump when the latter visits Scotland later this month, a source briefed on planning said. While no date for the meeting has been announced, planning is said to be underway, although the source did not wish to speak publicly as they were not cleared to make any comments.
Scottish police confirmed on Wednesday that they are preparing for a potential visit by President Trump, which would be his first visit to the United Kingdom since last year's presidential election in the US. The White House has not made any statements yet regarding the potential visit, and neither the British embassy nor UK officials have revealed any details.
The meeting would follow increasingly tight relations between the two leaders. In the last month, Starmer and Trump signed a framework trade deal on the fringes of the G7 summit, including cuts to US tariffs on British goods. The deal came after Starmer visited the White House in February, when he was welcomed warmly and received an invitation from King Charles to a future state visit, which Trump embraced.
UK press reports suggest that Trump is set to travel to his Scottish golf courses, Turnberry and Aberdeenshire, towards the end of this month. Sky News said his visit would be centered around private time at the courses, although meetings with UK officials, including Starmer, would be a high priority.
The anticipated visit is timed during a period of renewed focus on the transatlantic relationship, where both leaders want to reinforce economic and diplomatic relations against the backdrop of changing global dynamics.
