Meghan Markle is celebrating her 44th birthday today, and her husband, Prince Harry, is expected to make the day extra special. While no official details about the celebrations have been shared, reports suggest Meghan will spend her birthday privately with close friends and family in Montecito, California. She is likely to be the center of attention on her big day.

August 4 Is a Special Date for the Royals Too

Interestingly, Meghan’s birthday, August 4, is also important for the Royal Family for other reasons. Back in 1982, when Meghan was just one year old, Prince William was christened on the same date. The ceremony took place in the Music Room at Buckingham Palace. At the time, William’s full name William Arthur Philip Louis was read out during a ceremony led by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Robert Runcie.

Huge crowds gathered outside the Palace for the occasion. Though the event was private, the Queen Mother appeared on the balcony to greet the people before the christening began.

A Rare Royal Photo Was Taken That Year

Royal author Robert Jobson, in his book Catherine: The Princess of Wales, wrote,
"A large crowd had gathered outside the Palace and the Queen Mother appeared on the balcony before the ceremony. This time it was completely private, a closed event."
He also noted that photographer Jason Bell took rare, historic photos at Clarence House, including a special image of Queen Elizabeth II with the three direct heirs—Prince Charles, Prince William, and Prince George. Jobson explained this was the first time such a photo had been taken since 1899, when Queen Victoria was pictured with her successors—Edward VII, George V, and Edward VIII.

Birthday of the Late Queen Mother

August 4 also marks the birth anniversary of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. She was born in 1900 and became one of the most respected and beloved members of the British Royal Family. Her grace, strength, and sense of duty won the hearts of people across generations.

She played a key role during World War II, choosing to stay in London during bombings and visiting wounded soldiers. Many admired her calm presence and her unwavering support for King George VI, especially during times of national crisis.

After the King’s death in 1952, she became known simply as the Queen Mother. She remained an active and visible figure in royal life well into her later years. Even as she aged, she continued to attend public events and royal engagements with remarkable energy.

She passed away peacefully on March 30, 2002, at the age of 101. Her death came just seven weeks after the loss of her younger daughter, Princess Margaret. The Royal Family and the British public mourned deeply.

At the time of her passing, her elder daughter, Queen Elizabeth II, was by her side at Royal Lodge in Windsor. The Queen Mother's funeral drew heartfelt tributes from around the world. She was laid to rest beside her husband, King George VI, at St George’s Chapel.

Even years after her passing, her legacy lives on. Her strength during wartime, her long service to the monarchy, and her warmth toward the public continue to inspire admiration. August 4 remains a day of remembrance and celebration for her life and contributions.
