Tech Companies in the Crosshairs as Sextortion Complaints Skyrocket

Over 9,600 instances of adults grooming children online had been reported by technology companies in the UK alone during the first six months of 2024 a rate of approximately 400 cases per week. The statistics, based on reports received by the US-based National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), have also raised alarm among international law enforcement organizations, such as the FBI and the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA).

The NCMEC last year reported a whopping 546,000 reports globally of adults seeking children online, representing a 192% increase from 2023. Of these, the UK had 9,600 reports within a span of six months, with the Snapchat network leading as the one with the most volume of concerning content reported. The app recorded around 20,000 cases of sextortion and child sexual abuse content during the first half of 2024 more than the combined total reported by Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X, Google and Discord.

The Rising Danger of Sextortion

Sextortion where victims are forced to send indecent pictures and then blackmailed is a new priority for police. The NCA has unleashed what it describes as “unprecedented” campaigns to alert children, parents, and teachers to the threat. The agency said some teenagers have sadly committed suicide after being targeted by such offenses.

NSPCC children’s charity official Rani Govender called the statistics “shocking” and warned that they were probably downplaying the full extent of abuse. She went on to say that the psychological effects can be catastrophic, breaking trust and in some instances resulting in suicide. The NCMEC knows of more than three dozen teenage boys globally who have taken their own lives after being exploited since 2021.

Concerns have also been expressed about the function of privacy features like end-to-end encryption. Though created to secure users, these features can become obstacles in being able to identify abusive content. Snapchat, in contrast to certain rivals, does not implement end-to-end encryption on text messaging, which could be an explanation for the greater number of reports.

Disturbing Online Networks and Manuals

The investigations have revealed a shocking 101-page guide outlining how predators target young online users, including tips on devices, apps, and identities to employ. The guide is said to have originated with 20-year-old Arizona man Baron Martin, who was arrested by the FBI in December and called himself “the king of extortion.” The US Department of Justice alleges the guide has been “the catalyst for thousands of extortions.”

The guide has been said to circulate in “Com networks” dangerous Internet forums in which participants swap misogynistic and sadistic material and goad one another to commit abuse. The Institute for Strategic Dialogue says that these communities are part of a dynamic international network of abusers that work together to target and groom victims, routinely using pseudo-romantic overtures before blackmailing.

The FBI has attributed these networks to coercing victims into creating additional explicit content, self-injury, or even violent acts. Specialists state the only means to combat the threat is via vigorous, concerted effort throughout agencies, joined by public campaigns for awareness targeting youth, parents, educators, and guardians.

Snapchat and Facebook have not yet made any comments on the revelations.
