Trump’s Nobel Peace Prize Push Gains Momentum as Azerbaijan and Armenia Back Join Forces

President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan and Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan of Armenia signed a historic peace deal at the White House with the goal of resolving decades of hostilities between the two Caucasus neighbors. Both leaders who attended the ceremony commended President Donald Trump for his contribution in promoting communication.

After the signing, Aliyev publicly proposed a joint nomination of Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize:
“So maybe we agree with Prime Minister Pashinyan to send a joint appeal to the Nobel committee to award President Trump with the Nobel Peace Prize.”

Pashinyan quickly voiced his support:
“I think President Trump deserves to have the Nobel Peace Prize and we will defend that, and we will promote that.”

Growing International Backing

This marks the fifth country or leadership publicly backing Trump’s Nobel ambitions, signaling increasing global recognition of his peacemaking efforts. Earlier endorsements came from:

• Pakistan: Islamabad expressed strong support for Trump's nomination after he claimed credit for negotiating a ceasefire with India, even though India denied his role.
• Israel: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu formally presented Trump with a letter during his visit to Washington, advocating for the Nobel Peace Prize nomination.
• Cambodia: Following a US-brokered ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand after border clashes, Phnom Penh threw its weight behind Trump’s candidacy.
• With Azerbaijan and Armenia now adding their voices, the coalition of supporters spans multiple regions, all highlighting Trump’s diplomatic breakthroughs.

Controversies and Context

Trump’s Nobel push is not without debate. Critics question the extent of his direct involvement in some of these peace processes, especially given India’s dismissal of his role in the Pakistan ceasefire. In addition, although important, the peace deal between Armenia and Azerbaijan is still a precarious step in a protracted battle.

Nevertheless, the public backing from both former adversaries lends symbolic weight to Trump’s campaign. The White House event, which was televised worldwide, highlighted the US President's role as a global negotiator.

The Nobel Peace Prize committee will weigh numerous nominations in the coming months, with the decision expected later this year. Trump may have a better chance thanks to his expanding list of allies, but the award is still uncertain and politically delicate.
