In a post on his Truth Social platform, US President Donald Trump sent shockwaves through the international community, suggesting a historic breakthrough is imminent in the Middle East. “We have a real chance for GREATNESS IN THE MIDDLE EAST. ALL ARE ON BOARD FOR SOMETHING SPECIAL, FIRST TIME EVER. WE WILL GET IT DONE!!!” the president declared. This audacious claim alludes to a recently unveiled, comprehensive peace plan for Gaza, but the plan is already encountering major obstacles and has been flatly rejected by influential parties.

What Is the 21-Point Peace Plan?

The excitement from the White House stems from a detailed, 21-point framework reportedly crafted by the Trump administration. The proposal aims to definitively end the two-year war between Israel and Hamas that has ravaged the Gaza Strip. Major US media sites have reported on a number of important elements that make up the framework of this ambitious vision, even though the entire language is still private.

The plan’s immediate focus is a swift humanitarian resolution. It calls for the release of all hostages held by Hamas within a critical 48-hour window following the signing of an agreement .Beyond the ceasefire, the plan establishes the framework for Gaza’s future by clearly barring Hamas from any leadership position there. This long-term vision, which addresses issues that have plagued peace efforts for many years, is where the plan’s ambition reaches its zenith.

The Core Components: A Roadmap for a Post-War Gaza

The proposed framework attempts to address the conflict’s root causes and aftermath through several interconnected strategies. It’s not just a ceasefire; it’s a comprehensive plan for what comes next.

A central, and most controversial, pillar is the recognition of a Palestinian state. This has long been a goal of Palestinian diplomacy but a red line for many in Israel. The plan also outlines a full withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza territory. To rebuild the shattered enclave, a massive humanitarian effort would be launched. Furthermore, the proposal includes new security arrangements, likely to be guaranteed by regional powers, to ensure stability and prevent future attacks.

According to CNN, this proposal was discreetly shared with “a handful of Arab and Muslim countries” during the United Nations General Assembly in New York, indicating a behind-the-scenes push to build regional consensus before a public rollout.

Why is This Plan So Contentious?

The conflict this plan seeks to resolve has been extraordinarily devastating. According to the Gaza Health Ministry, the war, which erupted on October 7, 2023, has led to over 66,000 Palestinian deaths and displaced 90% of the population. This human cost has created immense international pressure on both Israel and its ally, the United States to secure a ceasefire and address the humanitarian crisis.

However, the very elements designed to create lasting peace are the ones sparking the fiercest opposition. While President Trump insists that “all of the countries within the region are involved” and that Hamas is aware of the talks, the group has already denied receiving any new proposals.

The most forceful rejection has come from Israel. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vehemently opposed the cornerstone of the US framework: Palestinian statehood. In a fiery speech at the UN General Assembly, which was applauded by members of the US delegation, Netanyahu drew a stark comparison.

“Giving the Palestinians a state one mile from Jerusalem after October 7 is like giving al-Qaeda a state one mile from New York City after September 11,” he stated. “This is sheer madness. It’s insane, and we won’t do it.” He warned that Western recognition of a Palestinian state would only reward and embolden violence.

What Happens Next?

The stage is set for a complex diplomatic struggle. The proposal, reportedly shaped by US special envoy Steve Witkoff, is still in its early stages. The gap between Israel’s position and the US vision is enormous. Trump’s hopeful assertion that “all are on board” is completely at odds with Israel’s actual efforts to change the plan and its categorical denial of a Palestinian state.

The path to “GREATNESS” is now mired in a fundamental disagreement over the most sensitive issues of the conflict. The world watches to see if this 21-point plan can bridge that gap or if it will become another failed attempt at a lasting peace.
