Russia’s ex-President Dmitry Medvedev Suggests Trump and Musk Buy Greenland

Dmitry Medvedev, the Deputy Chair of Russia’s Security Council and former President, recently commented on US President-elect Donald Trump’s controversial proposal to purchase Greenland. Instead of the US government taking control, Medvedev suggested that Trump and Tesla CEO Elon Musk should personally buy the island.

Medvedev’s Proposal

Medvedev questioned why the US would need to annex Greenland, Canada, or even the Panama Canal. He proposed an alternative solution: “Not sure why the US, as a country, needs to annex Canada, Greenland, or even Britain, and take back the Panama Canal. There’s a more civilized way: @realDonaldTrump and @elonmusk could just buy the land, making it their private property,” he wrote on X, formerly Twitter. However, it remains unclear whether Medvedev’s remarks were made in seriousness or sarcasm.

Trump’s Renewed Interest in Greenland

Trump’s desire to buy Greenland recently resurfaced, with him calling it an “absolute necessity.” However, Denmark quickly rejected his proposal, labeling it “absurd.” This reaction from Denmark was not surprising, given the history of similar comments from Trump.

Greenland’s Rejection

Greenland’s Prime Minister, Múte Egede, responded promptly to Trump’s remarks, emphasizing that the island is not for sale. “Greenland is ours,” Egede wrote. “We are not for sale and will never be for sale.” He further stressed the importance of maintaining their long struggle for freedom.

Trump’s Previous Attempts

This is not the first time Trump has expressed interest in purchasing Greenland. Back in 2019, he focused on the island’s natural resources and its strategic location. However, Danish leaders were quick to reject the proposal. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen called the idea “absurd” and even canceled a meeting with Trump after his remarks.

The Proposal Fizzles Out

Although Trump’s interest in Greenland continued throughout his presidency, the idea eventually fizzled out and was completely abandoned during the Biden administration. However, with his recent comments, it seems that Trump may attempt to revive the proposal should he return to office.
